Surgery and Anesthetics
Blepharoplasty or eyelids surgery is performed in the operating room, in a clinic or hospital. Normally, it is not necessary to stay in the clinic more than a few hours after the surgery. It is usually performed under local anesthesia more sedation, or less frequently, under general anesthesia. If the operation is performed with local anesthesia more sedation, the patient feels relaxed and his/her eyelids are insensitive to pain.
The intervention lasts between 1 and 2 hours. In upper eyelid the incisions are hidden in the natural lines of the eyelids and just below the eyelashes on the lower, or more often on the inside of the same.
In certain cases, especially in older patients, the ligament of inclusion of the eyelids relaxes by moving the outer corner of the eye down and in. In this way there is a reduction of the width of the eye, increased the curvature of the lower eyelid and fall of the side of the eye, which gives a sad look to the patient. It is in these cases where a canthopexy-canthoplasty would be indicated to improve the side angles of the eyelids and give a look of happiness to the image of the patient.
After surgery (post-operative)
After the surgery, we apply an ointment in the eyes to lubricate them, and in some cases, a smooth bandage. You may experience discomfort on the eyelids; If any, they are easily alleviated with medication prescribed by the doctor. You must keep the head elevated for a few days after the surgery and you must apply cold compresses to reduce the swelling and the bruising.
We will teach you how to wash your eyes and we will indicate to you if you need to apply ophthalmic eyedrops to keep your eyes hydrated. During the first weeks you may notice excessive tearing, hypersensitivity to light and temporal changes in visual acuity, blurred or double vision, all of them temporary. During the first two weeks I will continue your evolution in detail.
Stitches are removed between 5 days and week. The swelling and bruises gradually decrease until it disappears completely, and you will start to look and feel much better. The majority of patients who undergo a blepharoplasty begin to read or watch TV in 2 or 3 days. However, you may not use contact lenses if you use them, up to 2 weeks, and you can still feel uncomfortable for a while.
You can usually return to work in a week or 10 days; by then, you can apply makeup to hide the bruises. It may be necessary to wear sunglasses for a few weeks and apply sunscreen on your eyelids. You must maintain a relative rest for 3 to 5 days and avoid strong activities for 3 weeks.
